Recognise & Rewarding People

Drive round the Corus site to see all the work they had carried out and were clearly immensely proud of. Clugston had forwarded onto them a letter of praise from Corus for a recent job they carried out. They have never had such a letter from Clugston. How do we recognise and praise our workforce? It is often the simple gestures like writing a letter that make a difference.

I have never laughed so much in years! Just think how a foreman feels when he realises his ear defenders are not working and appear heavy because they have been filled with ball bearings! You can work hard and safely with great pride in your work – but still enjoy yourself and have a laugh.

Travel to Grimsby in Tony’s van. Guys invite me out for a drink with them. I can balance four pints of beer without spilling them. Good to meet workforce socially for a good chat.

The recession is putting a strain on how we reward and retain our workforce. We need to have more recognition and praise for things well done. We must look for and reinforce the good points and achievements with positive feedback. We need to do something that makes them realise that without them this company can’t function. We must recognise and emphasise the quality of people’s work.

Actions:

• Let’s make a thorough review of our current awards structure and see what needs to be removed or added – keep it fresh and up to date

• Chairman’s annual awards – introduce an award specifically for the workforce. It has to be something they will appreciate – not just for the sake of it
